Hackney on Ice is a grassroots community project introducing hockey into Hackney schools in a safe, inclusive, and inspiring way. Our first pilot is cost-free for schools and gives children the chance to discover a brand-new Olympic sport.
What is the pilot?
• A 2-term programme introducing hockey skills in PE through floorball and reading for Years 3–5 (ages 7–10).
• Donated floorball kit, books with a reading challenge, and ready-made PE materials.
• Five inclusive PE lesson scripts, adapted for SEND and designed to build teamwork, resilience, and confidence.
• Cost-free – all kit, books, lesson plans, and challenge materials are provided.
• Curriculum support – builds literacy (reading challenge), teamwork, and resilience.
• Inclusive & fun – designed to be available to every child, regardless of background or ability.
• Evidence-led – schools help shape Hackney’s first hockey model, with data collected on engagement, inclusion, and wellbeing.
• Recognition – listed as an official Hackney on Ice partner on our website.
• Legacy – the full floorball kit and pilot materials remain with the school for continued use.
• A safe, exciting opportunity to try a new Olympic sport.
• Adapted activities so every child, including those with additional needs, can join in.
• A reading challenge linked to sport, designed to boost literacy and imagination.
• Rewards: a Hackney on Ice sticker for every child, plus a puck for the school’s trophy cabinet.
• Early access to Hackney on Ice news and volunteering opportunities for families.
• Access to a closed Hackney on Ice community group where parents and teachers can swap, sell, or loan hockey kit.
• Official recognition for the school as one of the first Hackney on Ice partners.
• Watch parties and access to hockey films or live-streamed games.
• Priority invitations to offers from local hockey clubs and rinks.
• The chance to join a coached ice session at Lee Valley for up to 40 school-nominated pupils, with priority for disadvantaged children.
• Visits from players and coaches, and larger community events as the project expands.
The safety and well-being of children is our highest priority.
• All safeguarding & child protection, health & safety, and data protection policies are in place.
• The director is trained as a Designated Safeguarding Lead, holds certificates in Safeguarding in Sport and First Aid, and has a basic DBS check.
• We follow safer recruitment practices: any future volunteers will only participate once fully vetted and DBS-cleared.
Be one of the first Hackney schools to trial a new Olympic sport and help shape a model for the whole borough. Showcase your pupils’ resilience, teamwork, and creativity while giving them the chance to experience something brand new.
