FAST. FUN. INCLUSIVE.
FAST. FUN. INCLUSIVE.
Ice hockey is too expensive and too intimidating for most families. We're changing that.
Hackney on Ice is a grassroots community project bringing ice sessions to children in a way that is accessible, inclusive, and inspiring.
We started with a small pilot in one school, introducing floorball sessions with an ice hockey twist to up to 300 children. These sessions included tailored adaptations for SEND and disabled pupils, alongside a linked reading challenge supported by books. All equipment and resources are provided free of charge, with PE teachers delivering lessons supported by full training and ready-to-use plans.
This first step allowed us to test the idea, gather feedback, and learn as we grow. As the project developed and funding became available, we expanded into more schools and introduced additional opportunities. Our long-term vision includes “Skate & Learn” and "Skate and Play" programmes, dedicated provision for SEND and disabled communities, family-friendly festivals, and a Coach Development Pathway to nurture the next generation of role-model coaches.
But our mission goes further than sport. Hackney on Ice is using Hackney as a testbed for innovation, creating a model that can be replicated across other boroughs and counties. By embedding our values of respect, integrity, and inclusion from the bottom up, we aim to celebrate diversity, nurture both players and coaches, and strengthen Hackney’s reputation for community pride, sustainability, and fairness.
We want to build a culture from the grassroots up — one where the community supports each other, grows together, and displays true sportsmanship. Ice hockey is not about aggression: it is about strength, respect, and belonging.
OUR GOALS
Bringing fast, fun, and affordable hockey into Hackney classrooms to inspire teamwork, fitness, and fair play.
Skating and learning sessions that combine sport, education, and life skills, with dedicated places for disadvantaged children and further development opportunities.
Inclusive sessions designed with the SEND specialist coaches to ensure every child can experience the thrill of the sport (early concept stage).
A community spirit and inspirational role models for the children to meet and look up to!
Where are we now?
We have now successfully completed our first pilot programme at Gainsborough Primary School. Building on this experience, we have also finalised our second programme with Mandeville Primary School, which will begin in September 2026.
Following the school-based floorball sessions, pupils from Gainsborough Primary School attended an introductory ice-skating session at Lee Valley Ice Centre on 17 March 2026. The session was generously supported by Better and Lee Valley Regional Park Authority. Further information is available in our Reporting section.
During the pilot, the children also enjoyed a visit from players and volunteers from Lee Valley Lions and Lee Valley Vampires Ice Hockey Club. This gave pupils the opportunity to learn more about ice hockey, see the equipment up close, ask questions and meet positive role models from the local ice sports community.
The pilot then progressed to a six-week ice-skating course at Lee Valley Ice Centre, funded by Sport England and The National Lottery. The course began on 10 June 2026 and gave 10 children the opportunity to develop their skating skills, confidence and enjoyment of ice sports within a supportive and inclusive environment.
Other Development
Looking ahead, we aim to introduce a coach pathway as well as specialist support packages — from governance to coach exchange to expert coaching (Goalie/PEP)
Hackney on Ice CIC is actively building partnerships with schools, local clubs, and various organisations — with more to be announced soon.
Dedicated to the memory of Svetlana Amosova, who believed in the power of sport to shape lives.
